Places to Study
The library has locked study carrels. Due to ongoing renovations (only 14 are currently available as of January 2015). UTHSC students can reserve a study carrel in accordance with the terms and conditions below. By accepting a key to a study carrel, the student agrees to these terms and conditions.
Reserving a Study Carrel
A locked study carrel may be reserved for one month at a time. Renewals are allowed only if there is no waiting list, and no more than one consecutive renewal is allowed to accommodate all other students.
Students who do not currently have a carrel assigned to them may sign up for a study carrel from the 1st to the 25th of each month at the Circulation Desk. Students who are currently using a carrel may sign up for a renewal from the 25th of each month until new assignments are made. This arrangement gives everyone an equal chance at carrel use.
Study carrels are assigned by the Access Services Librarian or designated alternate between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Other arrangements for obtaining a key or assignment must be made with the Access Services Librarian or alternate.
Keys and Fines
Keys that are not returned at the end of the month accrue a fine of $5 per day. After five days, the holder will be billed for the cost of replacing the key or rekeying the carrel (approximately $300).
The library cannot be held responsible for items left in study carrels either during or after the end of a student’s term of occupancy. Personal items left in a study carrel will be held at the Circulation Desk and will eventually be disposed of.
Carrels are assigned at the Circulation Desk and through the library’s computer system, which generates and sends overdue notices and automatically accrues fines and other charges related to study carrels.
