Library Sponsoring Lecture on African-American Contributions to Civil War Medicine

The Library’s Health Sciences Historical Collections is pleased to announce Dr. Timothy Fabian’s lecture, The American Civil War: Hidden African American Contributions and Medical Advances. Dr. Fabian, Professor in the UTHSC Department of Surgery, will present his lecture in connection with the NLM traveling exhibit currently on display at the library, Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African American Contributions to Civil War Medicine.

Dr. Timothy Fabian received his medical degree from Loyola University. After a fellowship and faculty appointment at Emory University, he joined the UTHSC faculty in 1980. He is a Professor in the Department of Surgery and served as Chair of that department from 1999 until 2016. He is a past President of both the Eastern and American Associations for the Surgery of Trauma and has authored over 40 book chapters and 400 peer-reviewed manuscripts. Dr. Fabian was inspired to study the subject of African Americans in Civil War medicine after seeing the NLM traveling exhibit a few years ago.

The lecture will be Tuesday, March 27, at noon, in GEB A204. Light refreshments will be served, and the first 25 attendees will receive a free box lunch. The lecture is open to all students, staff, and faculty. Please contact Jennifer Langford at for more information.

Library Hosting NLM Traveling Exhibit on African Americans in Civil War Medicine

The Health Sciences Library is pleased to announce the opening of a traveling exhibit produced by the National Library of Medicine: Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine. Short-term carrel checkouts begin in January

In an effort to more efficiently utilize student study space, effective Tuesday, January 2, 2018, the fifth-floor study carrels are available for a shortened, fixed time check out.  Study carrel keys are due by 3:00 PM, the day following check out.  The demand for quiet, short term, individual study rooms is high. Short-term check out allows the library to maximize the use and number of carrels available to students. For more information please call the Information Desk at 448-5634.

New database “AccessSurgery” available

Anatomage Table available in the library

The Anatomage Table is now available for use in the UTHSC Library.

The Anatomage Table is a sophisticated anatomy education resource that provides many options for viewing and dissecting detailed anatomy models using an intuitive touch screen interface. It includes 3 full body cadavers that are completely annotated and fully dissectible. It contains an image library that has 1,400 models, which include many unique specimens and disease process case studies such as conjoined twins, broken bones, heart defects, etc. Read the rest of this entry »

New Library Staffed Hours (effective August 1, 2017)

Effective August 1, 2017 UTHSC Health Sciences Library will institute a revised schedule of staffed hours for the 2017-18 academic year. As always, UTHSC Library is accessible 24/7/365 for student use and these changes will not impact access to the Library space.

Library staffed hours will be:

Sunday: 2pm-10pm Monday-Thursday: 8am-10pm Friday-Saturday: 8am-5pm

Note: All checked out equipment (such as laptops, heaters, and chargers) must be returned to the staff before closing hours to avoid overdue notices and fines. Read the rest of this entry »
